As we have already mentioned on other occasions, October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Thanks to this celebration, the world is becoming more and more aware of the importance of giving voice to mental health problems in order to try to improve people’s emotional quality of life. From Mixer & Pack, we would like to do our bit for this important day, talking about an aspect that may not be much commented on, but that really has a great impact on mental well-being: smell.

All the smells that surround us, from home to work, to the fragrances we use, have the ability to directly influence our emotions, our memories or our mood. Therefore, in this article we explain how smells are closely related to mental health and how perfumery can become a powerful tool to achieve greater emotional well-being.

The connection between smell and emotions

Smell is the only one of the five senses that connects directly to the brain’s limbic system, influencing our emotions and memories. For this reason, there are certain smells that have the ability to transport us to past times, to generate serenity or security, or, on the contrary, discomfort or alertness. In this way, fragrances stand as tools through which consumers’ emotions can be connected, to provide them with comfort and give them identity and well-being.

This important connection between smell and emotions is supported by scientific studies that claim that certain scents can improve people’s moods, reduce their stress, or help them fall asleep better or concentrate more. Taking this into account, it is evident that smells are directly related to mental health, since thanks to them, sometimes small symptoms of anxiety can be mitigated or states of calm can be reached more easily.

Scents that support emotional well-being

There are certain olfactory notes that have an effect that positively influences the nervous system and emotional balance. Some of them are:

  • Lavender. It reduces anxiety and has relaxing properties that help you fall asleep.

  • Pink. It has a calming effect that increases tranquility and the feeling of self-love.

  • Jasmine. It has the ability to improve mood, provide energy and increase concentration.

  • Bergamot. It helps to reduce stress and provides freshness and emotional balance.

  • Sandalwood. It has relaxing properties that reduce anxiety and promote mental clarity.

  • Vanilla. It provides a feeling of warmth and emotional security.

    Functional fragrances: beyond perfume

For World Mental Health Day, it is interesting to talk about what are known as functional fragrances, as they are a good option when it comes to using smells to promote emotional well-being. These are perfumes that stand out not only for their aromatic appeal, but also for their ability to positively influence the mood of users.

Some of the fragrances and products that can promote emotional self-regulation, the creation of stress-free environments and improve the quality of life on a daily basis are: pillow mists, soothing air fresheners, scented candles, energizing or relaxing perfumes…

    Olfactory empathy and emotional health

The concept of olfactory empathy, already explained in a previous post, has to do with the creation of fragrances that develop an emotional connection with consumers. In other words, it is not only about designing good perfumes, but also about provoking certain emotions in users such as tranquility, confidence, joy or security.

Products and fragrances that positively influence people’s emotional state are of great value because, despite not being a clinical solution, they are small gestures that help with daily care and make a difference.

    Scientific evidence of olfactory impact

The relationship between smells and mental health is not something abstract or invented, there are scientific studies that support the idea that smell is a very useful tool for emotional support. Examples:

    • The scent of lavender has the ability to reduce heart rate and cortisol levels, which is the stress hormone.

    • Citrus essential oils have anxiolytic properties.

    • The use of certain odors in hospitals, such as eucalyptus, can improve pain perception and preoperative anxiety.

Taking into account these data, the perfume industry should assume a more conscious and responsible role, to offer consumers products that help them improve their emotional well-being.

A fragrance as an act of care

From Mixer & Pack we want to invite brands to celebrate World Mental Health Day. The action of perfuming is more than just an aesthetic act, it is a sensory fact that can influence day-to-day emotions, which is why we encourage brands to develop fragrances that help take care of consumers’ emotional well-being.

In the face of anxiety or daily stress, the simple gesture of spraying yourself with a perfume of floral or citrus notes and menthol, woody or stimulating aromas, can serve to find or improve people’s mental balance. In this way, perfumery becomes a little-known and silent emotional tool, but quite effective.
